"'Charlie Rose' by Samuel Beckett"
November 18th, 2008

Something has happened to PBS favorite "Charlie Rose." The erudite conversations and sober intellectualism have been replaced by an absurd world where illogic, inane dialogues, and open hostility rule. The one-on-one interview between Charlie and his guest begins as usual but quickly goes awry, so much so that Charlie is warned that, somewhere, a man named "Steve" is "not happy." But who is "Steve" and why is he angry? And why does the mere mention of his name stop Charlie cold? Using appropriated footage from a single episode of "Charlie Rose," filmmaker Andrew Filippone Jr. creates something both disturbing and farcical in "'Charlie Rose' by Samuel Beckett." A "Rolling Stone" magazine "Top 10" (May 15, 2008). Featured in "New York" magazine's "Approval Matrix" (May 5, 2008). WINNER: Best Experimental Film at the 2008 Artsfest Film Festival and the 2008 Hardacre Film & Cinema Festival.

Desiderata - Max Ehrmann Another inspirational poem set to music ;) if you like this check out my other vids, feel free to comment. Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Samuel L. Jackson and Bernie Mac (RIP), gives their best in SoulMen
November 18th, 2008

Soul Men traces the story of two estranged soul-singing legends, Louis Hinds (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd Henderson (Bernie Mac), who must reunite for a tribute concert at the Apollo Theater after the death of their former groups lead member (John Legend). With only Floyds lime green 1971 Cadillac El Dorado convertible to get them from L.A. to New York, Hinds and Henderson embark on a road trip that just might give these bickering soul men another chance to harmonize if they dont kill each other first. Sharon Leal (Dreamgirls, This Christmas), Jennifer Coolidge (Epic Movie, For Your Consideration), Sean Hayes (The Bucket List, Will & Grace), Adam Herschman (I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, Accepted), Affion Crockett ("Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins," "The Boondocks"), soul music icon Isaac Hayes (South Park, Hustle & Flow), and Grammy-winning R&B recording artist John Legend also star. No one could believe someone hadnt thought of it first. Sam Jackson and Bernie Mac have never been in a movie together. Ever, says Soul Men producer Steve Greener, who is also Bernie Macs manager. Its unbelievable. You would think these two guys who know each other and have been around for so long would do something together. I was surprised they hadnt worked together, echoes producer David Friendly. It wasnt for lack of desire; Mac and Jackson had always wanted to collaborate. Sam and I have known each other for a long time, says Mac. We fraternize. We play golf together, weve been over to each others houses. Everybody was always asking us when we were going to do something together, because were both such strong presences. I kept saying, Its going to happen. Bernie and I have known each other since way before anybody knew who Bernie Mac was and people were just starting to discover who I was, says Jackson. We have been friends for a very long time, and we have great chemistry together. Theyve been trying to find a vehicle us for a while. A couple of years ago Greener approached Friendly, an old friend and fellow producer who was nominated for an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine and has collaborated with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence on several films. He said, Bernie and Sam Jackson want to work together, recalls Friendly. Thats all we had—just the notion of these two guys in a movie. Greener and Friendly started meeting with writers. One of the first writing teams that Friendly contacted was Robert Ramsey and Matt Stone, the duo that had written Life for Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. I knew Rob and Matt would have some ideas, says Friendly. We all went to lunch and got talking, pitching ideas back and forth. Then either Rob or Matt said, what if Sam and Bernie were back-up singers like the Pips? The leader of the group has died, and they have to go to New York to do a tribute concert. And I said, thats it, says Friendly. Thats a movie. http://www.blacktree.tv

MONDAY NIGHT CONVERSATION WITH SAMUEL L. JACKSON. http://www.blacktree.tv BlackTreeTV, now available on the iPhone, iTV, iTunes, YouTube, and BlackTree.tv RESURRECTING THE CHAMP Yari Film Group Presents A Phoenix Pictures, Battleplans Prods. Production A Rod Lurie Film Producers: Bob Yari, Marc Frydman, Rod Lurie Executive producers: Mike Medavoy, Arnold W. Messer, Bradlely J. Fischer, Louis Phillips, Frederick Zollo Director: Rod Lurie Screenwriters: Allison Burnett, Michael Bortman Based on an LA Times Magazine article by J.R. Moehringer Cast: Samuel L. Jackson (Champ), Josh Hartnett (Erik), Teri Hatcher (Flak), Kathryn Morris (Joyce), Rachel Nichols (Polly), Alan Alda (Metz), David Paymer (Whitley), Dakota Goya (Teddy), Peter Coyote (Epstein), Ryan McDonald (Kenny), Harry J. Lennix (Satterfield Jr.) Living on the streets of Denver, pushing a shopping cart piled high with all his worldly possessions, the man everyone calls "The Champ" (Samuel L. Jackson) knows he was not the greatest boxer to ever step in the ring, but at least he had a shot at it. After years of succumbing to fighters who ultimately found his glass jaw more often than he landed a winning punch, the Champ went from up-and-coming to mere has-been, with no heavyweight championship under his belt. Now he fights no one but cops and street thugs. Living in the shadow of his former self, this champ is down and halfway out. Denver Times sports reporter Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) knows the feeling. He's been living in the shadow of his famous father Erik the "Wow Man" Kernan ever since he too decided to be a journalist. Listening to tapes of his old man's lively radio broadcasts -- Erik is aware that he has some big journalistic shoes to fill. Assigned to cover all the bush-league sporting events, he wants a shot and the big time, but his hard-driving editor Metz (Alan Alda) is quick to tell Erik he's just not cutting it. "I forget your pieces while I'm reading them," Metz complains. "A lotta typing -- not much writing." Rapidly losing ground at work and at home -- his wife Joyce (Kathryn Morris) has asked for a separation -- Erik is afraid of becoming an absent father to his son Teddy (Dakota Goyo) just like his father was to him. He needs to make changes, to put heart back into his life and into his work . . . but how? One night after leaving the paper, as Erik sees a gang of thugs beating up a homeless man. He notices how well the grizzly old fellow can take a punch. He bobs, he weaves, he lands a few good ones himself until Erik chases the thugs away, leaving jeers of how they beat "The Champ" in their wake. Erik realizes he has just rescued the legendary "Battling Bob Satterfield" and stumbled on the story of a lifetime. But rumor had it Satterfield was dead . . . and yet here he was. An article about the rise, fall and resurrection of a former heavyweight contender could get Erik's career off the ropes and breathe life into his confidence. A story like this could be the title shot he has been waiting for a chance to change his life forever.
